My crochet lady of the Lake is now on show in a group exhibition, tucked away in a quaint gallery,  20 rue Montebello in the former Cité de l’Ecrit in Montmorillon.

Inspired by the Welsh fable – the Lady of the Lake, this piece captures the essence of a mystical figure caught between two worlds.

Her story….

The Lady of the Lake is a mystical figure from Welsh folklore, renowned for her beauty and her tragic love story with a mortal man.

According to the legend, a young farmer named Gwyn falls in love with a beautiful woman he sees emerging from a lake.

He is captivated by her and eventually wins her heart, but she agrees to marry him only under one condition: he must promise never to strike her three times, even in jest. For many years, they live happily together and have three sons.

However, over time, Gwyn unintentionally breaks the promise, striking her three times in moments of frustration or jest. The Lady, bound by the terms of their agreement, is forced to return to the lake, leaving her husband and children behind.

Before she disappears into the water, she imparts wisdom to her sons, who grow up to become great physicians known as the Physicians of Myddfai.

The story of the Lady of the Lake is one of love, loss, and the inevitable consequences of broken promises. It reflects the delicate balance between the mortal and the mystical, and the enduring impact of legends and fables on our understanding of love and fate.

I created a portrait that suggests both submersion and emergence, reflecting the delicate balance of existence and the themes of love and loss woven into the tale.
